Getting Real: The Dangers of Online Dating
Sure, we’re an online dating site. We shouldn’t be writing an article that doubts the success of online matchmaking. But, we insist. It is because we are an online dating site that we should be talking about things that actually matter – like the dangers that may come with online dating.
If there’s anything we value more than our own happiness in love and life, it is seeing other people accomplish the same. We take pride in what we do. We believe that everyone deserves an equal shot in the game called love. However, unfortunate as it may be, there are people who regard online dating sites as nothing more than a place to do business – a marketplace where they can earn some extra bucks in exchange of shallow affection.
I hate to say it, but there are people like that. And we’ve purposefully written this article to warn you about them.
Here are a few telltale signs that the perfect partner may not be so perfect after all:
They’re A Little Too Curious
Questions like ‘What do you do for a living’ or ‘Are you living in your own house or just renting a flat?’ shouldn’t be a real worry for two people who are still in the preliminary stages of online dating – especially when no physical meeting has yet to be arranged. Asking questions about your financial capacity right off the bat should already serve as fair warning of what kind of person you’re dealing with.
They’re Being Too Materialistic
Love is present everywhere. It is not confined in some fancy restaurant, elite night club, or an exquisite pub that charges a hundred dollars for a mug of draft beer. It is present even in the simplest things and modest places. If your ‘match’ doesn’t feel comfortable hanging out with you in normal places and likes being a social butterfly more than getting intimate with you, then there’s got to be something wrong there.
They’re Not Showing Interest In You As A Person
When you told them about how your dog enjoyed a day at the beach, they couldn’t care less. But when you told them you normally drive your Mercedes to town and they’re all ears. You can tell a lot about a person by simply observing their priorities. I’m not saying you should go around judging people, but only to be more vigilant. A person who’s genuinely interested in you will become so preoccupied with absorbing your individuality that they’d hardly even care about your worldly possessions.
Love greatly and genuinely but never blindly. It is important to always keep our physical, mental, and emotional state in check. Because even though there are a lot of good people out there, there are also a lot of opportunistic ones. And there’s no way of getting rid of them. The only way you can protect yourself is to learn how to tell one apart from the other.
Love truly is a dangerous flame to kid around with – always play with caution.
